Susan Goodman is a Partner at Mesch Clark Rothschild. She joined in 2013, expanding the firm’s healthcare practice to include regulatory compliance expertise. Susan focuses her practice on healthcare provider support through risk assessment and mitigation in the areas of fraud and abuse prevention and HIPAA/HITECH. She also supports the U.S. Bankruptcy Trustee as a privacy/patient care ombudsman in Chapter 11 healthcare reorganizations.
Susan received her JD from the University of Arizona James E. Rogers College of Law, graduating with distinction, including Summa Cum Laude and Order of the Coif. She served as an Executive Note Editor on the Arizona Law Review. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix, graduating with academic distinction. Susan also received an RN diploma from Bronson Methodist Hospital School of Nursing, affiliated with Western Michigan University, graduating with First Honor and the Nursing Excellence recognition.
Susan has a process-based, integrated approach to compliance through assessment and intervention that involves patient care, operations, and shared services. With her combined knowledge of law, business, nursing and healthcare operations, Susan provides efficient, proactive counsel and practical efficiencies for healthcare organizations of all sizes. Her education and experience allow her to quickly assess, simplify, and address her healthcare client’s legal and business needs in the increasingly complex and regulated healthcare environment.
Susan’s healthcare operations experience includes both revenue integrity and expense management. She has evaluated and corrected processes to further regulatory compliance and reduce costs. While in the acute-care setting, she developed an emergency department charge-capture/billing process that became the network standard after third-party auditing demonstrated error reduction and improved compliance. Susan worked collaboratively with service line and technical staff to finalize and implement a hospice billing interface and system integration process to meet hospice billing compliance regulations. She has also defended medical clients in litigation, provided contract review and negotiation assistance, and developed and enhanced compliance programs for organizations. As a patient care and consumer privacy ombudsman, she surveys and reports on key operational metrics that affect patient care and record issues in health care bankruptcies.
With expertise in business and healthcare operations, Susan has managed physician preference supply chain consignment and inventory processes and modified a price override process with significant savings in the supply area. Working with in-house legal counsel, physicians, supply inventory specialists, buyers, charge capture personnel, vendors, quality, risk management, service line leadership and administration, she reduced supply expense as a percent of net patient service revenue. Additionally, Susan managed the consignment transfer/elimination process for a hospital closure that included record reconciliation.
Susan’s professional experiences further include direct patient care in cardiac catheterization lab and cardiac critical care service liens, cardiac medical device industry experience in clinical education support, sales, marketing and human resources management, hospital admission team management, revenue and expense hospital-based performance improvement work, and data analytics.
